Angela Hartnett to Open New Restaurant in St James’s

August 1, 2013

The Crown Estate has today announced that it has finalised a deal with celebrity chef Angela Hartnett, to bring her newest restaurant concept to St James’s.

The letting marks the second major restaurant deal completed by The Crown Estate in St James’s in the last two weeks, following an agreement with US based Altamarea Group to bring their newest restaurant, Chop Shop, to Haymarket.

Hartnett’s latest offering will take nearly 3,000 sq ft of space at 33 St James’s Street.  The deal holds special significance for the Michelin Star chef, who trained in the very same building under industry renowned chef Marcus Wareing at Gordon Ramsey’s Petrus, early on in her career. Hartnett is now returning to the place her career began to bring her newest concept restaurant to the heart of St James’s.

Angela Hartnett has enjoyed incredible success throughout her career, staring alongside industry icon, Gordon Ramsey on ITV’s Hell’s Kitchen and making an appearance on BBC 2’s Great British Menu, where she represented Wales. She is already well acquainted with the West End, having previously opened MENU and The Grill Room at the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair in 2002.

The Crown Estate has committed to a £500m investment programme for St James’s, which will transform the area, establishing it as a vibrant shopping and dining destination. Part of this process has seen the West End’s largest property owner already successfully attract a number of high profile restaurant occupiers to St James’s, including Cicchetti and Philippe Le Roux’s Villandry.

Announcing the deal, Anthea Harries, St James’s Portfolio Manager for The Crown Estate said:
“When we drew up our strategy for St James’s, occupiers of Angela Hartnett’s quality were exactly who we had in mind. St James’s is a fantastic part of the West End, famous for its culture and heritage. Part of our strategy is to make it famous for its restaurants as well. The deal with Angela Hartnett is the clearest signal yet that the plan is working.”

Angela Hartnett said: “Training here under Marcus was one of the highlights of my career so having the opportunity to return, this time to open my own restaurant, really is fantastic. St James’s profile as a dining destination is picking up pace and, with The Crown Estate’s plans for the future, I think this is set to become one of the most exciting parts of London for those of us in the restaurant business.”

DCL is retained by The Crown Estate as the sole food and beverage agent for St James’s.
