Coffer Peach Business Tracker cements its market leadership

CGA’s authoritative sales barometer for Britain’s managed pub, bar and restaurant sector reaches new milestone, welcoming its 60th partner

CGA has signed up the 60th company to participate in its Coffer Peach Business Tracker, the country’s definitive monitor of sales among managed pub, restaurant and bar groups.

The monthly Tracker was established in 2009 to measure sales performance across the key market sector. Since then the cohort of participating companies, which includes both major corporates and smaller entrepreneurial enterprises, has continued to grow, and pre-COVID accounted for £11.6bn of annual sales, from more than 10,000 sites across 140 different brands.

Latest additions to the roster include Nando’s, BrewDog, Cote Restaurants, Drake & Morgan, Giggling Squid, Oakman Inns & Restaurants, Rosa’s Thai Café, Star Pubs & Bars and Tattu. (See below for the full list of participants)

“It is already the most widely quoted market measurement, featuring in many an annual report,” said the Tracker’s co-founder Peter Martin. “Attracting new partners extends the reach, relevance and authority of the Tracker, but also underlines its established importance to the sector.”

The Coffer Peach Business Tracker is produced by CGA in association with long-term sponsoring partners RSM and The Coffer Group, and its publicly-available monthly reports are regularly used by the media, analysts and investors to assess sales and market trends, while contributors rely on the figures to benchmark performance against their peers.

As well as headline figures on like-for-like and total sales movements, it provides splits by criteria including sector, location, covers and food and drink sales. In return for supplying data, participants receive detailed analysis of sales figures, plus exclusive weekly sales updates.

David Coffer, chairman of The Coffer Group, said: “I am proud to have been involved in the creation of the Coffer Peach Business Tracker alongside Peter Martin who, with his Team, has done so much to create what is considered to be the landmark reference for the food and beverage market in the UK.

“My career spans 55 years and Coffer Peach is one of the most important events in that time and one of which I am immensely proud. The Coffer Group is looking forward to the next period of mutual support with our partners.”

In recent months the service has helped to measure the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns and trading restrictions, and it will be a crucial tool as the sector seeks to recover sales.

Peter Martin added: “It has played an important part in the growth of the chain restaurant and managed pub and bar sector for more than a decade now. As the out-of-home market continues its road to recovery in 2021, the Tracker will be at the side of businesses to act as a pivotal source of trading patterns and actionable insights.”

Paul Newman, head of leisure and hospitality at RSM, said: “RSM is delighted to have supported the Coffer Peach Business Tracker for so many years. Welcoming its 60th partner, the Tracker continues to grow in strength and depth as the essential industry barometer for managed pubs, bars and restaurants. Up-to-date market intelligence in such fluid times allows us to provide practical and relevant advice to our clients that might just give them a competitive edge. We look forward to commenting on positive trading trends as we head into Spring next year rather than the constant doom and gloom that has dominated sector headlines for much of 2020.”

Simon Potts, CEO at The Alchemist, said: “Coffer Peach Business Tracker enables us to quickly compare our performance to the market and is the definitive benchmark for the sector. We love the ability to look at the different market segments each week, as well as the market as a whole.”

Chris Hopkins, commercial and marketing director at Mitchells & Butlers, added: “Robust, credible and timely, Coffer Peach is the go-to tracker for anyone who wants to understand performance trends in the hospitality sector.”

“The Coffer Peach Business Tracker is the industry benchmark and is a valuable indicator for everyone connected to the sector,” said Douglas Jack, leisure analyst at Peel Hunt.

Peter Martin said: “We are delighted and proud to reach this milestone. But it wouldn’t have happened without the co-operation, support and encouragement of the industry and the people in the companies that contribute figures every week and every month – not to mention the support of our sponsors, RBS and the Coffer Group. So many thanks to all of them.”
