Handmade Burger Co to be the First New Addition at The Gate

The Crown Estate today announced that it has finalised its first new letting at the Gate, the North East’s premier leisure destination. The award winning restaurant, handmade burger Co., will be the first leisure provider to open its doors at the Gate since The Crown Estate purchased the centre in 2012. The letting forms part of The Crown Estate’s strategy to further enhance the leisure mix at the Gate, creating a destination that continues to respond to the demand of existing visitors, but also does more to appeal to other consumer groups, like families.

The restaurant will be handmade burger Co.’s first in Newcastle and their second in the North East. It will offer diners more than 40 different delicious burgers, made from scratch and hand pressed in the restaurant every single day. It also offers a fantastic range of options for children, making it extremely popular with families.

First opened in the Midlands in 2006, the family-owned and run restaurant chain is committed to sourcing the best quality produce from the best British farmers, with owner Chris Sargeant regularly visiting farmers to ensure that the company stands by its fresh food philosophy.

The Gate was purchased by The Crown Estate from the Royal Bank of Scotland in September (2012) for £60 million. The only covered leisure scheme in Newcastle, the Gate attracts over 8 million visitors a year. It comprises of 18 units and spans 210,000 ft2 and is anchored by an Empire cinema. Other occupiers include Nandos, The Restaurant Group, Pizza Hut and J D Wetherspoons.

The Gate forms part of The Crown Estate’s £1.5 billion Regional Portfolio which includes interests in 14 retail parks and three shopping centres. Over the last four years The Crown Estate has invested over £500 million in prime regional retail across the UK.
