Rex Restaurant Associates acquires its latest site

Rex Restaurant Associates – the operator of some of Londons most iconic restaurants including The Wolseley, The Delaunay, Colbert and Brasserie Zedel – is to open a new restaurant after DCL – the leisure specialists – acquired the company a unit on Marylebone High Street.

This is the latest venture for Chris Corbin and Jeremy King – the pair behind Rex Restaurants. Previously trading as Cotidie the 3000 sq ft (approx) restaurant will be renamed Fischers and will be influenced by early 20th Century Vienna. It is intended that it will open in Spring 2014.

Josh Leon, Associate Director at Davis Coffer Lyons commented: Its a fabulous property occupying a great location on one of the most sought after streets in the Capital. We recommended the site to Rex who saw the opportunity, and we brokered a deal for them with the owner. We also handled the rent review negotiations with the Landlord, Howard de Walden, with whom we have a great relationship already. Late last year we brokered the deal for the hugely successful 28:50 in nearby Marylebone Lane which I know Howard de Walden are particularly pleased with. I have no doubt that Fischers will be fabulous when it opens, becoming another of Rexs instant classics and will provide a very useful dining option for this part of town.

Situated adjacent to the landmark Kendals building, which is due to be refurbished and when completed will provide approx. 500,000 sq ft of Grade A office space together with approx. 40,000 sq ft of retail & leisure space, Deansgate benefits from a high footfall 7 days a week and is a popular pitch for F&B, leisure and retail.

We are delighted to be working with John Lewis on the appointment of a new hospitality partner to operate the rooftop of its flagship Oxford Street store.

The rooftop garden was created in 2014 as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations for John Lewis, and most recently played host to Willows on the Roof’s Winter Terrace.

A suitably fitting operator is sought to deliver a compelling restaurant, bar and garden for the space, which has panoramic views across central London’s skyline.

Coming soon to Covent Garden… London’s first Mexican “churreria”. @aguamiel.ldn - a flagship dessert bar majoring on churros doughnuts - launches this month at 24 Wellington Street; a thriving Theatreland destination close to Covent Garden Piazza.

Churros, made fresh in-house, will be served with a choice of sugar or real cinnamon and sugar, along with one of three dips (dulce de leche, condensed milk or chocolate), partnered with quality coffee and specialist Mexican hot and cold drinks, including aguas fresca, horchata and spiced hot chocolate.

@dcl_leisure acted on behalf of Shaftesbury Capital to let the 800 sq ft unit.

Season’s Eatings Day #15: Brutto

We end the year, and our Season’s Eating’s series, with a tribute and a toast to Russell Norman; one of hospitality’s finest and a truly inspirational figure whose loss is keenly felt.

Russell’s impact on London’s dining scene in London was immense. From the launch of Polpo in 2009 to his most recent project @bru.tto, both he and his restaurants were defined by creativity and flair, attention to detail and genuine warmth and hospitality. Whilst rapturously received and commercially successful, they were underpinned by a sincere and scholarly passion for the source of their inspiration, as was evident in Russell’s award-winning books “POLPO: a Venetian cookbook (of sorts)”, “Spuntino – Comfort Food (New York Style)”, “Venice – Four Seasons of Home Cooking” and “BRUTTO: A Simple Florentine Cookbook”.

We had the privilege of working with Russell and his business partner Richard Beatty on projects from the first Polpo on Beak Street, to Polpetto, Spuntino, Mishkin’s, Ape & Bird and Brutto - the Clerkenwell restaurant that is Russell’s take on a Florentine bistro. The lively neighbourhood trattoria proved an instant hit; a winning combination of simplicity, authenticity and conviviality, with a sprinkling of Russell’s fairy dust. Long may it live on.

Season’s Eatings Day #14: Arlington

News began to emerge earlier in the year that hospitality legend @jeremyrbking would make a very welcome return to the capital’s dining scene with not one, but three major projects.

The first to open in early 2024 will be a reinvention of Le Caprice - the restaurant where Jeremy began his career with business partner Chris Corbin - which will open under the new name of Arlington.

Though originally opened in 1947, Le Caprice took on a new lease of life when it was taken over by King and Corbin in 1981, becoming one of London’s most in-demand dining rooms with a stellar clientele, tended to by “maître d’ without equal” Jesus Adorno, with whom King is re-uniting for the project. Adaptions of old favourites from the menu for 21st century tastes are planned for @arlingtonlondon, by former Le Caprice head chef Will Halsall and team.

The launch will be followed in the spring by the opening of @theparklondon in the new Park Modern building opposite Kensington Palace Gardens, to be followed by a reinvention of institution Simpsons in the Strand.

Season’s Eatings Day #13: Bunsik, Westfield Stratford City

@westfieldstratfordcity has today welcomed popular Korean street food brand @bunsik_london.

The fast-growing brand’s fifth site is located within the busy lower ground floor food court. Alongside its epic corn dogs, kimbap, ddukbokki and Korean fried chicken, in a first for the group, a range of vegetarian options are on offer, including the debut of its first veggie burger.

The launch marks a milestone in the growth of the ambitious brand, which launched in 2021 on Charing Cross Road.

DCL advises URW on F&B and leisure at Westfield Stratford City and Westfield London.

@restosune – which takes its name from the Nordic name for son, as well as the name of sommelier Spencer’s wine mentor Sune Rosforth in Copenhagen – is a neighbourhood restaurant with a seasonal menu that champions British produce, served alongside the best seasonal natural wines.

The pair have an outstanding pedigree, with decades of experience between them gained across the globe, including Sims’ role as restaurant manager of Noma.

DCL worked on behalf of the exiting tenant and the landlord in order to negotiate a new lease.

Season’s Eatings Day #11: Farm Shop, Mayfair

Just in time for festive food shopping, independently hospitality business Artfarm has opened Farm Shop on South Audley Street, across the road from sister operations The Audley Pub and Mount Street Restaurant.

Featuring the same award-winning products as Somerset’s @farmshopuk at the 1,000 acre Durslade Farm in Bruton, the new opening also houses a separate butchery room selling high-welfare meat, including beef and lamb from the farm. Star turns include wine created from grapes grown on the estate; honey from its hives and cider from the orchard, as well as products from emerging and established artisans in the South West. Refuel on Christmas shopping trips with cheese toasties and hearty hot beef sandwiches, generously filled with the farm’s own meat, or high-quality coffee from roastery Mozzo.

A 40-cover eatery and wine cellar will open on the lower ground floor in the new year.
